After visiting spring training locations in Arizona last week, officials with the Houston Astros have committed to trying to get a spring training facility built in Palm Beach Gardens.

“Our focus is making a deal in Palm Beach Gardens. We are not looking anywhere else,” said Giles Kibbe, the general counsel to Houston Astros owner Jim Crane.

The proposed spring training facility would be off of Central Boulevard on the north side of 117th Court North on an 82-acre piece of county owned land. The biggest variable in getting the stadium approved is the estimated $100 million cost to build the facility. The state would pay for half of the cost but the city and county would need to come up with the other $50 million.

On Saturday, about a dozen dogs traded in their leashes for live vests and rode surfboards as part of the first event Dog Surfing Competition. Taking to the beach just south of Carlin Park in Jupiter, the event raised money for the Wellington based Big Dog Ranch Rescue.

Despite the rough waves and rip currents, over 500 people and their “furry friends” attended the event put on by Ocean Magic Surf Shop in Jupiter.

Big Dog Ranch is a no-kill dog rescue facility that provides shelter, care, and affection to homeless and unwanted dogs of all breeds. They then adopt the dogs to people that are willing and able to take them.

The event was so successful that Ocean Magic hopes to make the dog surfing competition an annual event. Months were spent organizing
