A manatee rescued in West Palm Beach is now being treated in Miami at the Miami Seaquarium.  Police officers with Riviera Beach and West Palm Beach teamed up with officers from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) to rescue the manatee near the Manatee Lagoon.  A spokesman at Manatee Lagoon said the manatee is being treated for a severe lung infection.  The good news is she is eating regularly now.

Also known as an “ocean potato” or “sea cow”,  the beloved Florida manatee is a gentle giant you’ll see calmly cruising throughout Jupiter Intracoastal waters. Manatees have a very friendly disposition, and while it may be tempting to feed or give them fresh water from your dock, it is illegal as they are a protected species.

Manatees are protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972, the Endangered Species Act of 1973, and the Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act of 1978. It is illegal to feed, harass, harm, pursue, hunt, shoot, wound, kill, annoy, or molest manatees. This Saturday, February 1st, celebrate Manatee Lagoon’s fourth anniversary at ManateeFest! Families are welcome to photo opportunities with Mia the Manatee, a Super Bowl themed FanZone, a Kids Fun Zone with ocean-inspired face painting, and marine life puzzles. Kids are encouraged to visit each participation station to have their “passport” stamped in order to receive a prize for visiting all activities.

ManateeFest will also feature local arts and crafts vendors, food vendors, live music, and environmental exhibitors including 4ocean, Busch Wildlife Sanctuary, the Coral Restoration Foundation, Florida Fishing Academy, Loggerhead Marinelife Center, South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, and the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.
