Top 10 South Florida Boat Subs

Posted by Lacey Hagler on Thursday, August 9th, 2018 at 11:54am.

Whether you’re fishing, diving, or just cruising, if you’re heading offshore there’s a lot involved when prepping for a day on the boat. There’s one crucial part of “equipment” you’re not going to want to forget- subs! Sub sandwiches wrapped in deli paper and sealed in a Ziplock are the easiest lunch to throw in the cooler, not to mention their deliciously fresh hours later when you keep dressing on the side. From the Floridian favorite “Pub Subs” to the best fresh-baked sweet bread, here’s a list of the best delis in North Palm Beach County to grab pre-packed lunch for everyone on the boat!

1. Publix Deli

Have you ever heard the expression “drinking the kool-aid”? Well, Floridians are that crazy about Pub Subs. Whether it’s because of convenience or taste, Floridians fiend over “Pub Subs” like northerners fiend over Wa-Wa, so this one has to be at the top of the list. There are 20 Publix locations east of I-95 in Palm Beach County alone, and since they open at 7 am and close at 10 pm, it’s super convenient to drop in whether you’re prepping the boat the night before or swinging by on your way to the marina in the morning. To make it even easier to access these freshly made favorites, you can order ahead online for a quick pick-up when you told someone you’d “be there in 5,” but you’re still searching for your flip-flop.

2. Russo’s Submarine Sandwich Shop, Lake Park

Russo’s bread is THE bread. Russo’s has been around forever, and they bake deliciously perfect sweet bread rolls every morning so the sweetness of the rolls and the saltiness of the fresh deli meat can have a flavor party in your mouth. Each sub comes with sides of oil, vinegar, and crushed red pepper so nothing gets soggy in transit and you can add on as much or as little as you like. Oh yeah, and there may always be a long line for these tasty flavor bombs, but they are QUICK so it moves fast. They open at 10 am, close at 6 pm, and are closed on Sundays, so plan accordingly!

3. Hobe Sound Deli, Hobe Sound

This is a mom and pop sub shop you won’t want to miss out on. You know when you walk into a place and it feels like home? Well this is one of those places. Go in more than once and they will remember your order. Not only do they have delicious subs, but they also open at 7 am with phenomenal breakfast sandwiches, so you can grab lunch AND breakfast for everyone on the boat. Not to mention, Tiger Woods pops in every once in awhile, so you might get a glimpse of golfing greatness!

4. Palm Harbor Marina Gourmet Deli, Palm Beach

If you’re docked or fueling up at Palm Harbor Marina in downtown West Palm Beach, this is not only super convenient, but extremely tasty! The deli owner here, Dawn, is the nicest woman on the planet (besides your mom, of course), and she will set you up with one of her tastebud-pleasing sandwiches with the biggest smile you’ve ever seen. This deli is for the weekday trips, as it is not open on weekends, but if you make it here, you should either try Dawn’s secret recipe “cruising chicken salad” sandwich, the “sailor’s sunrise” breakfast sandwich, or the “anchor,” a belly buster piled high with roast beef, turkey, ham, and cheese.

5. Rinaldi’s Deli, Tequesta

Rinaldi’s is a friendly neighborhood deli that not only makes everything, including their tasty meatballs, by hand, but also delivers for free in about 30-60 minutes. I’d say this is your best bet if your boat is already in the water behind your house! They’re open from 6:30 am until 3 pm on Saturdays, so call them at 6:30 Saturday morning with your order and it’s at your door by 7:30. Sunday they’re closed for family time at the beach!

6.The Connection For Subs And Sandwiches, Jupiter

Connection has been around since 1974, which says they must be doing something right. These subs are piled high with tasty deli meats, and they have a “lite bites” option for half the meat if that’s what you prefer. Their Italian sub is a go-to local favorite with pepperoncinis added for mouth-watering flavor.

7. Flip Flop Sub Shop, Tequesta

This one is a bit off the beaten path, but worth it, and you can gas up and grab ice and drinks here too! Flip Flop Sub Shop is located inside the Sunoco gas station at the northwest corner of US Highway 1 and Tequesta Drive, and has many faithful Tequesta residents returning daily. This place has great service, is very quick, and you’re getting a delicious sub filled to the max with meat and veggies!

8. Jon Smith Subs

John Smith’s may be a franchise, but the “el jefe” of the company opened his first shop in 1988 in Palm Beach County, making these high quality overstuffed, marinated sirloin steak and chicken breast subs a local sensation. This place doesn’t microwave, steam, or pre-cook, so you’re getting steak on an honest-to-goodness real grill!

9. Jersey Mike’s

Jersey Mike’s is a franchise, so don’t expect a guy name Mike from Jersey serving your sub, but these are all over town, and they’re fast, convenient, and tasty if you’re looking for a great sub to bring on the boat. I’ve heard people swear they have the best chicken philly- you be the judge!

10. Jimmy John’s

I’m sure you’ve heard the commercials. If you’re looking for a sub that’s “freaky fresh”, but really truly absolutely “freaky fast”, this is definitely the spot. JJ’s keeps things simple with daily fresh baked bread and minimal vegetable options to keep decisions fast and things moving even faster. If anyone is prone to sea-sickness in your group, you can also grab a few extra loaves of bread for fifty cents each.
