Six golfers from northern Palm Beach County survived the second stage of the PGA Tour's qualifying school and will now advance to the Q-School finals in December.

Dan Berger, Ryan Armour, and Derek Fathauer of Jupiter, Sunny Kim and Kevin Johnson of Palm Beach Gardens, and Jon Curran of Tequesta all advanced from their respective qualifying spots last week and will now move on to the Q-School finals in California.

Berger, Curran, Kim, and Armour advanced from the Plantation qualifier, while Fathauer and Johnson advanced from the Brooksville qualifier. The Finals take place in La Quinta, California December 12th through the 17th and will be held at PGA West's Nicklaus Tournament Course and TPC Stadium Course.

Although she came up short at the LPGA Tour's season finale, Palm Beach Gardens resident Stacy Lewis did enough to lock up the Vare Trophy for low scoring average.

Lewis finished in a tie for sixth at the CME Group Titleholders with rounds of 71, 73, 63, and 71. As a result, the Medalist member finished with an average of 69.484 strokes per round which was good enough for the low scoring average on the LPGA Tour in 2013. By winning the Vare Trophy, Lewis became the first American to win the award since Beth Daniel in 1994.

"As Americans, we hear about that all the time -- it's been 18 years or it's been 20 years or whatever it is," Lewis said. "I'm just glad to have that kind of checked off the list. We've got to get American golf on the map.…

On Monday, Peter Uihlein became the first American ever to win the European Tour's Rookie of the Year honors.

The part time Palm Beach Gardens resident and roommate to fellow European Tour golfer Brooks Koepka won the Madeira Islands Open, had two runner-up finishes, and earned over $1.8 million during the 2013 season. In addition to earning his European Tour card this year after playing the last two years on the European Challenge Tour (the European Tour's equivalence of the Web.com Tour), Uihlein finished 14th in the season-long Race to Dubai.

Medical researchers at Scripps Florida must be pleased with the news of Professor Phillip LoGrasso, a professor in the Department of Molecular Therapeutics, receiving an award from the General Medical Sciences of National Institute of Health for more than $1 million dollars.  Professor LoGrasso’s award has been allocated for the development of  analyzes that could point potential ways to find therapies for debilitating diseases including diabetes, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, heart disease and stroke.  The link between diseases is a protein known a “jun-N-terminal kinase “(JKN), an important contributor to stress induced cell death in neurons, beta-islet cells, and heart muscle cells.

That's because Seminole Golf Club and the USGA have agreed to hold the 2021 edition of the Walker Cup, the amateur version of the famed Ryder Cup. The bi-annual competiton will mark the first time since Seminole opened up in 1929 that the famous course will hold an event that is open to the public.

The decision was made after Jimmy Dunne, the president of Seminole and native New Yorker, saw how well this year's Walker Cup went when it was held at National Golf Links in New York.

Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse

The Jupiter Town Council decided to postpone the decision on the 800 –parking space garage on Parkway Street and A1A, not far from Jupiter Inlet Colony, until December 3.  An email was sent stating “the postponement will allow the Town to investigate some of the issues and considerations raised by residents and businesses.  

Some of the issues raised during the meeting included whether or not the town had considered all possibilities for alternate locations for the parking garage.  A concern was beachgoers, using the Parkway Street garage, for nearby Dubois Park, and how would that be managed?  Had the one level of underground parking on U.S. 1, known as Piatt property, been considered?  What was happening with the Town owned parking lot on Love…

He might have had to travel all the way to China to get it, but Dustin Johnson now has a World Golf Championship title to add to his resume.

Playing in the WGC-HSBC Champions at Sheshan International lead for three out of the four rounds and finished with a 6-under par 66 on Sunday to win by three shots over Ian Poulter. Setting a tournament record with a four day total of 24-under par, the Loxahatchee River resident also won 550 FedEx Cup points. This year's edition of the WGC-HSBC Champions awarded FedEx Cup points for the first time in the tournament's history as it became part of the 2013-2014 wrap around schedule.
