Want to be a marine hero? If you are a boater or a regular beach visitor there is now an easy way to help aid a stranded or injured dolphin or whale. There is an APP for that called: “Dolphin & Whale 911” which enables you to immediately report live or dead, stranded, injured or entangled dolphins, whales and seals in the Southeastern United States (Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North and South Carolina, Texas, Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands). This app supports you to report animals in distress and in need of assistance.

The report will connect you to the Southeast U.S. Marine Mammal Stranding Network and locate the nearest response hotline to your location, so that trained responders and veterinarians can recover or rescue the animal. Send a time/date/GPS coordinate, stamped photo of the animal and identify the animal by providing an electronic field guide of marine mammals found in the Southeastern U.S. all within the app.

Your quick reporting may help save am animals life by providing rescuers with real time information about the location and kind of marine mammal in trouble, also leads scientists to collect valuable information that will help marine mammal conservation. This app also provides you with the “do’s and don’ts” or tips on what to do when you find a live or dead stranded dolphin, whale or seal.  

By providing valuable information on smartphones, including a colorful species identification guide, the public will know who to call and what to do in a marine situation, thus contributing to marine mammal conservation.
