DRAGON BOATING inspires TEAM SOS PALM BEACH COUNTY
There is an ancient sport that is making a comeback in South Florida that is called Dragon Boat Racing. Imagine paddling with a lot of upper physical strength just after undergoing treatments and/ or overcoming breast cancer. In Palm Beach County, dragon boating is regaining popularity and is quickly becoming a movement that is impacting breast cancer survivor’s spirits!
If you never heard of dragon boating, it is one of the fastest growing water sports in the world. It is a team paddling water sport that has its roots in a folk ritual of villagers originally from Southern China. For dragon boat races, the boats are generally assembled with decorative Chinese dragon heads and tails.
Debbie Brooks, resident of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida shared her passions for Dragon Boating and founded a Racing Team! Team SOS Palm Beach County, are always so eager to be on the water, and their mission is to: “promote a healthy, active lifestyle and provide organized opportunities for physical fitness, wellness education, and psycho-social empowerment among Breast Cancer Survivors and their supporters through the sport of dragon boating.” It has enriched many lives and takes a lot of endurance and strength to build stamina and as well as physical core strength. In the process, members become as close as family among the empowering women.
“The doctors have saved our lives, but dragon boating has saved our spirit!”
In Jupiter, Florida the movement has brought new life and from the Jupiter Outdoor Center, “breast cancer survivors have the opportunity to enjoy the support of other survivors , while working out with women who share similar experiences and goals as they regain control over their bodies and lives after a diagnosis.”
