Hideki Matsuyama made history Sunday, becoming the first Japanese golfer to win a men's golf major championship by winning the 2021 Masters.

Matsuyama, who also won his first major, survived a shaky start, followed by a shaky back nine to hold off the competitions and earn the victory. Coming into the final round with a four-shot lead, Hideki immediately bogeyed the opening hole. Combined with tournament runner-up Will Zalatoris getting off to a birdie-birdie start, Matsuyama headed to the second tee with his four-shot lead having dropped all the way down to a single shot. From there, he settled in and built the lead back up before making the turn.

You know what they always say though, the Masters doesn't start until the back nine on Sunday, which was the case again despite the large lead.  Matsuyayama made bogey on 12 and Xander Schauffele caught fire, birdying holes 12 through 15. Heading to the par 3 16th it looked like Xander might not just catch Hideki but even be well on his way to passing him. That's when he put he tee shot in the water before reloading and going off the back of the green. He would go on to triple bogey the hole, dropping out of contention and essentially handing the Green Jacket to Matsuyama.

While Zalatoris didn't come away with the victory, falling just one shot short, it ended up being quite the eventful weekend for him. In addition to the $1.2 million he won for finishing runner up, Zalatatoris, who currently holds no full-time status on any professional golf tour, locked up his PGA Tour card for the 2021-2022 season while also qualifying for all the remaining majors and WGC events on the 2020 calendar.
