ONE OF THE TOP RANKED U.S. SNORKEL SPOTS is in PALM BEACH COUNTY
The clear, warm waters of South Florida and the Palm Beaches offer year round snorkeling spots that can be found almost anywhere, but a very popular Palm Beach County snorkeling spot was ranked and named among the 12 best snorkeling spots in the country, according to Yahoo Travel!
Most of South Florida boasts many snorkeling spots that people tend to frequently enjoy by drifting along and seeing underwater creatures come to life! However, one particular area of South Florida was ranked among the best areas to snorkel by Yahoo Travel and pointed to the area of Peanut Island within Singer Island, Florida where the warm waters are comfortable at 85-degrees during September and continuously has a plentiful array of underwater critters to appreciate.
Peanut Island is an 80 acres island in the Intracoastal Waterways that was formed in 1918 and was named “peanut” after the island was used as a terminal for shipping peanut oil. In 1946, the plans for the enterprise fell through and the name stuck. THe island possesses two separate areas that are great to snorkel, one is a small reef and then a larger lagoon, on the east side of the island where the incoming tide tends to sweep in a variety of sea life. Among the sea life, snorkelers will be able to catch a glimpse of brightly colored parrotfish and angelfish, cushion star fish and many other reef dwellers!
Peanut Island has become a very popular destination for locals and out of towners. “Many people who visit The Palm Beaches enjoy our world-class diving and snorkeling spots,” said Jorge Pesquera, president and CEO for Discover the Palm Beaches, the official tourism marketing organization for Palm Beach County. “Because of the unique geographic location and close proximity to the Gulf Stream, our waters have the largest variety and most abundant marine life found anywhere in Florida or the Caribbean. From sea turtles to sting rays, there is so much life to see around Peanut Island, the Blue Heron Bridge snorkel trail and other local dive spots.”
Yahoo Travel list has ranked five other Florida Snorkel spots, including Peanut Island, which are Key West, Marathon, Key Largo, and Crystal River!
