Put a Jupiter Light on your Plate
The Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse, here in Jupiter, is the highlighted lighthouse on every new “Visit Our Lights” specialty license plate sold by Florida’s Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. There are thirty lighthouses still standing proud in Florida. There is a $25 annual special fee for the plates, in addition to registration fees. Proceeds benefit the Florida Lighthouse Association, a nonprofit that supports the preservation of the state’s lighthouses. The new plate with the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse will be available for the next 10 years. The original version of the specialty plate has been available for purchase since 2008. It illustrated the striped St. Augustine Lighthouse.
Florida has more than 1,800 miles of coastline, more than any other state in the continental United States. To ensure safe marine navigation along that vast stretch of waterfront, there is an impressive collection of lighthouses in Florida, including some of the nation's oldest and tallest. Of the thirty lighthouses still standing, most of these have been lovingly preserved and several have undergone a complete restoration.
The Florida Lighthouse Association is a foundation that offers invaluable statewide assistance. It affords grants to the state of Florida for the restoration and preservation of lighthouses. These grants are critical for entities managing these historic structures. Since 2009, the association has distributed more than $675,000 in grants supported by the sale of its specialty license plate.
Palm Beach County automobile owners can get the new plate 90 days before the renewal date of their current plate.
