Rain wreaked havoc on the opening day of the week long festivities associated with the Honda Classic at PGA National yesterday. The Miami Dolphins Pro-Am was cut to only nine holes after a 30 minute rainstorm intensified, causing tournament officials to call the event in order to preserve the courses conditions for this weekend’s event.

“We want to make sure the golf course stays in the best condition as we work toward Thursday,” tournament director Ed McEnroe told The Palm Beach Post. “We don’t want it to become too sloppy out there and potentially affect the golf course come competition time.

Rain could affect more than just yesterday’s event. More rain is expected on Tuesday afternoon, when the pros are expected to get their first of two practice rounds in. Thursday’s opening round could also see some rain as forecasters are calling for a 30% chance of showers throughout the day.

Another full day of activities is scheduled for Tuesday, featuring PGA tour practice rounds and a Junior Golf Clinic hosted by the 2010 Honda Classic Champion Camillo Villegas. The clinic gets under way at 4pm.
