Rory Suffers Soccer Injury, Rest of 2015 Up In the Air
Around 6am ET on Monday morning, Rory Mcllroy posted a picture to his Instagram in a walking boot and on crutches. The post had a caption that said “Total rupture of left ATFL (ankle ligament) and associated joint capsule damage in a soccer kickabout with friends on Saturday. Continuing to assess extent of injury and treatment plan day by day. Rehab already started..... Working hard to get back as soon as I can.”
Rehab time can range anywhere from 10 days to 6 weeks depending on the severity of the sprain. That puts not just the next few weeks, but the remainder of the 2015 season in doubt for the Palm Beach Gardens resident.
Mcllroy was scheduled to play the Scottish Open this week and his name has already been removed from the published field list. After this week, his schedule and rehab situation will get much more interesting.
10 days from today (the earliest predicted time when Mcllroy could be healthy enough to tee it up again) is the Open Championship at the Old Course at St. Andrews, where Rory is the defending champion. The Open Championship was supposed to be his second of four events he planned in a six week span that also included the PGA Championship and the World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational.
Mcllroy has had previous success at the courses where the next two majors will be held. The last time the Open was held at St. Andrews in 2010, Rory opened with a 63. Even though he shot an 80 on Saturday, he still managed a tie for third. Mcllroy also finished in a tie for third the last time the PGA Championship was held at Whistling Straights, missing out on a playoff by one shot. Rory is also the defending champion at this year’s PGA Championship.
