Sea Turtles Make Appearance on Jupiter’s Beaches Over Weekend
This time of year is sea turtle nesting season in Florida. The majestic sea turtles make their way out of the ocean and onto shore to lay their eggs. During the summer months, Jupiter becomes a safe haven for nesting turtles that have been coming to lay their eggs on these beaches for hundreds of years.Â
The town makes a great effort to change all of the beach road lighting to an ambient red color that will not disturb the turtles and prevent them from coming ashore to nest. The traffic lights get a special filter that makes the light only noticeable to cars driving along the road and the correct angle and of course there are strict rules observers must follow when it comes to watching the turtles nest. You may come to the beach to watch the turtles climb out of the ocean and dig their nests however you must keep a far distance, do not film or photograph the turtles and no light allowed whatsoever. All of these disturbances can cause the mother turtle to turn around and swim away to try and find another nesting site. Â
Over the weekend the Loggerhead Marinelife Center took count of how many turtles came ashore to lay their eggs. They will continue to take count throughout the turtle-nesting season which goes from March until October.Â
Loggerhead Marinelife Center Turtle Count so far:Â
Leatherback turtles: 130Â
Loggherhead turtles: 4,429
Green turtles: 2
