Valentine’s Day is February 14 each year and observed in honor of the Feast of Saint Valentine. Who is this Saint Valentine and where did the customs come from?

The roots of Valentine’s Day stem from an ancient Roman fertility festival celebrated during February 13 - 15.  The present day Valentine’s holiday is a blending of ancient Roman and Christian traditions.  Shakespeare and Chaucer romanticized love in their writings.  Handmade paper cards with proclamations of love became “tokens du jour in the Middle Ages”.

February is considered the most romantic month of the year.  According to the Greeting Card Association 1 billion Valentine’s Day cards will exchanged.  Valentine’s Day falls second only to Christmas for highest number of cards exchanged.  During the Christmas season, over 2.5 billion cards are sent.  They also state that women purchase approximately 85% of the Valentine’s Day cards.  This little holiday is big business!  According to market research, provided by IBIS World, Valentine’s Day sales are expected to reach $18.6 billion.

There is so much available in South Florida to celebrate this romantic holiday of hearts, cards and flowers.  South Florida is hosting two of the most romantic singers in the world this Valentine’s Day, Tony Bennett and Andrea Bocelli. Tony Bennett will be performing at the Kravis Center and Bocelli will perform at the Hard Rock Live in Hollywood.   The West Palm Beach Meyer Amphitheater will bring Latin, funk, and hip-hop artist DJ Spam and Spam All Stars to the West Palm waterfront.  Bring your own chairs and blankets for the 4pm-7pm performance.

Prepare for the day of love by making reservations for a four course-dining extravaganza on Palm Beach or put together a picnic basket and blanket.  Either way, spending the day with your loved one is all that is required.
