Summertime often means long hours in the sun in Palm Beach County. Most of us remember to protect our skin by applying sunblock, but do not forget that your eyes need protection as well. It is important to start wearing proper eye protection at an early age to shield your eyes from years of ultraviolet exposure.

The American Optometric Association encourages buyers to make sure their beloved sunglasses provide excellent protection from the harmful effects of the sun’s ultraviolet rays. You most likely are aware that too much exposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays can cause sunburn and skin cancer. The UV rays can harm your eyes.

When you are performing your daily sun protection regimen, do not just stop by applying sunscreen. Make sure to wear…

With the coronavirus continuing to impact a large number of people in South Florida, it is important that residents remain vigilant in their efforts to stay mentally and physically healthy. Overall health and wellness includes everything from exercising, to eating right, to keeping in touch with loved ones and, of course, maintaining a healthy diet. Here are some things to keep in mind this summer while we all work together to “flatten the curve” and return to normalcy as quickly and safely as possible.

1. Eat Your Vegetables

You need to eat your vegetables! Shoot for five servings of vegetables a day—raw, steamed, or stir-fried. A diet high in vegetables is associated with a reduced risk of developing cancers of the lung, colon, breast, cervix,…

While the state of Florida is moving as fast as it can toward full re-opening, we still need to keep in mind all of the essential CDC guidelines. The governor’s office released the following reminders. Noting that, we must bear in mind that, as Floridians, we are all in this together and we have a responsibility to continue practicing mitigation measures.

These general mitigation guidelines are minimum recommended health protocols and are designed to be utilized at every phase of re-opening.

For Individuals

  • Practice social distancing, as the virus is most transmissible indoors under close, sustained contact. If you are around other people, try to maintain 6 feet of separation.

Yesterday, Gov. Ron DeSantis touted the low number of new coronavirus cases reported overnight, highlighting a drop in new infections in counties where businesses were allowed to partially reopen.

DeSantis said the daily report from the Florida Department of Health disputed the idea that areas, where restrictions have been eased, will see large increases in the number of people testing positive for COVID-19.

While he promised to closely monitor the continuing march of the disease, of the 386 new COVID-19 cases reported Monday only 183 were in the 64 counties where restaurants and retail shops were allowed to reopen at 25 percent capacity seven days ago.

“It’s been a pretty consistent theme throughout this, from the very beginning,” he said,…

Florida has reported only 37,439 positive coronavirus cases, ranking it eighth in the U.S. for the number of confirmed cases despite being the nation’s third most populated state.

The case and death numbers point to something many may find surprising: Florida has not become as much of a hot spot as other states such as New York, California, and Michigan.

The state has fewer cases per capita than other heavily impacted states, such as Louisiana. According to Johns Hopkins University, Florida has had a total of 176 cases per 100,000 people compared to Louisiana, which has had 644 per 100,000 people.

Most of the Sunshine State entered its first phase of reopening on Monday, with restaurants, retail stores and museums allowed to operate at no…

The COVID-19 response in Miami-Dade got two upgrades Wednesday: the opening of a mask decontamination facility at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens and a mobile testing laboratory that can process 500 tests per day from long-term care facilities around the county.

“We believe this will be a game-changer,” said Gov. Ron DeSantis, who toured the facilities Wednesday.

The decontamination facility is made up of four shipping containers that can clean 80,000 N95 respirator masks per day, at no charge to healthcare personnel and hospitals or long-term care facilities. The system uses hydrogen peroxide vapor to clean used masks, which can be cleaned and reused up to 20 times.

According to the Miami Herald, While the decontamination facility is only…
