Palm Beach County has declared annually every second Saturday in December to be Andrew “Red” Harris Artificial Reef Day! The Andrew “Red” Harris Foundation was created to honor the memory of Andrew Harris, a Jupiter resident, who was struck by a boat while snorkeling in the Jupiter Inlet in 2014. The foundation’s mission will help assure the long-term health and vibrancy of the local marine environment where Andrew loved to dive and fish. This will be a day to celebrate Andrew’s life and the reef work done in his memory.

Anyone and everyone who is a friend and supporter of the Andrew “Red” Harris Foundation is invited to join the Jupiter Civic Center at Carlin Park for a 4:00 PM party. The county is sponsoring a John Tesch concert at the nearby…

South Florida is a diving magnet with luscious reefs with natural and fabricated beauty under the surface. Did you happen to know that over the past 20 years, Broward County’s Artificial Reef Program has situated over seventy-five synthetic reefs on the ocean floor? One mile off the coast of Deerfield Beach is a reef known as Rapa Nui Reef. It weighs about three hundred tons and is half the length of a football field. The Rapa Nui Reef distinguishes the city in the way 887 similar monuments did Easter Island in the remote South Pacific.

The reef is the combination of a public art project of the “Moai” figures that were created in Stuart along with fabricated reef materials. The reef is called Rapa Nui, the Polynesian translation of “Easter Island.”…

Palm Beach County reefs are part of the largest coral reef ecosystem in the continental United States! Just beyond South Florida’s white-sand beaches, are natural and artificial reefs that provide a multitude of diving, snorkeling, boating, and fishing opportunities for residents and visitors alike.

Running parallel to Palm Beach County’s coast lies forty-seven miles of natural coral reef formations. These formations were created thousands of years ago and are part of Florida’s Coral Reef that stretches 360 miles from the St. Lucie Inlet to the Dry Tortugas. For the past 40 years, Palm Beach County has created reef areas using various materials to give people additional areas for fishing, diving, and snorkeling and to protect natural reefs from…

The Andrew “Red” Harris Foundation has been building reefs off the Palm Beach County coastline for several years. The Andrew “Red” Harris Foundation was created to honor the memory of Andrew Harris, a local young man, who was struck by a boat while snorkeling in the Jupiter Inlet. Andrew loved to dive and fish, and the foundation’s work will help ensure the long-term health and vibrancy of the local marine environment.

The foundation began a substantial education initiative in 2018. The goal was to donate a 5-book set of the “Professor Clark the Science Shark” series to every third-grade classroom in Florida, 55,000 books in all! The goal was met!

Children love the story of the little boy, Andrew, who becomes a lifelong friend with an orphaned…
