Celebrate Kwanzaa from Delray Beach to West Palm Beach this holiday season. This winter holiday takes place from December 26 through January 1 each year. Kwanzaa celebrates harvest festival traditions from various parts of Africa. The name Kwanzaa is derived from the phrase “matunda ya kwanza” which means “first fruits” in Swahili.

Although Kwanzaa is based on ancient and modern celebrations in Egypt and Southeastern Africa, the Kwanzaa holiday as we know it today was started in the United States. Kwanzaa was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, a professor at California State University, Long Beach after the Watts Riots in Los Angeles.

As temperatures cool in Palm Beach County, it provides the ultimate opportunity to meet one of our most-loved residents, the Florida manatee. Our beloved “sea cows” are massive marine mammals that live in the coastal waters of Florida.

Manatees have earned the reputation as gentle giants.  They are large, slow-moving marine mammal with an elongated, round body and paddle-shaped flippers and tail. Manatees are herbivores, feeding solely on seagrass, algae, and other vegetation in freshwater and estuarine systems in the southeastern United States.  Manatees on the average weigh up to 1,000 pounds and up to ten feet in length.

For a reasonably priced family fun day consider taking the kids to the Palm Beach Zoo during the month of August.  The zoo will be offering free admittance for kids under the age of 12 during the month of August. The August special at the Palm Beach Zoo includes admission to the Splash Pad. The Palm Beach Zoo is located at 301 Summit Blvd, West Palm Beach just minutes away from the prominent island of Palm Beach.

The Palm Beach Zoo offers two free child admissions per full-price adult ticket, is valid when they are attended by a paying adult.  Children under 3 are always free.  Parking is free.
