Tuesday, November 18, 2014 between 10:00 – 11:30 am, bring a picnic lunch along with a favorite teddy bear or stuffed animal and enjoy an amusing morning! The “Teddy Bear Picnic” will include story time with Brenda Nickolaus, lots of singing, and a grand teddy bear parade!

The teddy bear became an iconic children’s toy and is one of the most popular gifts for children to signify love.  The name “Teddy Bear” comes from former United States President Theodore Roosevelt, who was commonly referred to as “Teddy”. The former president disliked the moniker.  The name originated on a bear hunt, when Roosevelt refused to shoot the bear that had been cornered, struck, and tied to a tree.  He thought it to be unsportsmanlike and ordered that the bear be put out of its misery. Later a political cartoon made light of the situation with the bear being much smaller and cuter and produced the “Teddy” name.

A toy builder saw the cartoon and was inspired to build a little stuffed bear.  After receiving permission to use the name, he put it in his shop window and called it “Teddy’s Bear”.  Across the Atlantic Ocean, a German toy builder also started building stuffed bears.

The craze for stuffed bears began many years ago and has it has been a favorite toy of children for many years.  The first teddy bear museum was set up in Petersfield, Hampshire, England.  Retail sales of stuffed plush toys including teddy bears are in excess of $1.6 billion dollars annually.

If your little one, ages 5 & under, are Teddy Bear fans, please register for the first ever “Teddy Bear Picnic”.  Spaces are limited and pre-registration is required.  The picnic will be held at the Jupiter Community Center, 200 Military Trail, Jupiter.  Please contact Summer Magun at (561)741-2400 for more information.
