Enter a unique world of Japanese gardens and art without having to travel all of the way to Japan. Nestled in Northern Boca Raton is the Morikami Museum and Japanese Garden.

Morikami has a rich history dating back to over a century. In 1904, Jo Sakai, a young graduate of New York University, returned to his homeland of Miyazu, Japan, to organize a group of pioneering farmers and return to what is now northern Boca Raton to start a garden. With the help of the Model Land Company, a subsidiary of Henry Flagler’s East Coast Railroad, they formed a farming colony they named Yamato, an ancient name for Japan. Their crops and gardens were intended to revolutionize Floridian agriculture, but after a series of events the Japanese families eventually returned home.

Now, the Morikami Museum and Gardens are a small yet beautiful remnant of their influence on our land. The museum opened in 1977 and has been one of the most celebrated places for honoring global cultures.

The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens take great pride in providing an incredible experience of authentic Japanese culture and agriculture in the form of gardens. You can experience rotating exhibitions like: tea ceremonies performed monthly in the Seishin-an tea house, educational outreach programs with local schools and organizations, and Japanese traditional festivals celebrated for the public several times a year, Morikami strives to spread appreciation for the living culture of Japan.

The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens are a must see destination whether you live or vacation in South Florida. Morikami is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10am to 5pm.
