This weekend, Tiger Woods finally got win number 18. It wasn’t majors though (he is still stuck on 14), but rather World Golf Championship titles. Woods shot an even round 70 on Sunday at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational to win his fifth tournament of the year.
The win was Woods’ eighth career victory at Firestone Country Club, matching the record set by Sam Snead at the Greensboro Open and Tiger himself at Bay Hill, and was done in dominating fashion.
Woods started the week off with a first round 66 on Thursday, finishing the round two shots off the lead. That would be the last time he would trail. The Jupiter Island resident lapped the field with a 9-under 61 on Friday and flirted with a 59 for most of the afternoon. After starting the round birdie, eagle, birdie, he carded another birdie at the par-3 seventh to go out in 30. Woods then proceeded to birdie the next four holes in a row. Needing to play the last five holes at 2-under to record a 59, Woods settled for par and a 61 to take a lead that he would not give up.
Not only did he not surrender the lead at any point over the final 36 holes, nobody even got close. Woods’ lead never dropped below six shots and got as high a nine at one point on Sunday before settling at a final winning margin of seven shots over defending champions and Loxahatchee River resident Keegan Bradley and Henrik Setenson.
While Tiger’s record when holding the 54 hole lead is nearly perfect (54-4), the same cannot be said about his record in a major following his last win. Woods has only won four majors the week after winning an event but will look to change that when he heads to New York this week in search of major number 15.
