Tiger Woods Regains Number 1 World Ranking with Victory at Bay Hill
Tiger Woods is back in a position where golf fans have been used to seeing him for close to a decade, at the top. With his weather extended victory this morning, Woods regained the top spot in the World Golf Rankings for the first time since October 30, 2010. He also passed Brandt Snedeker to take the number one spot in the Fed Ex Cup Standings.
The Jupiter Island resident continued to play like the Tiger of old, improving to a record of 41-2 when going into the final round with the lead. It was his second win in as many weeks and third on the season. This was the eighth time he has won the Arnold Palmer Invitational, tying him with Sam Snead for the most wins at a single event on the PGA Tour. The win, his 77th, also puts him only five victories behind Snead for the most PGA Tour wins of all time.
He finished the Florida swing with a tie for 37th at The Honda Classic at PGA National before winning the next two he played in at Doral and Bay Hill in Orlando.
Woods fired a 2-under par 70 to finish the tournament at 13-under, two shots ahead of Justin Rose who also shot a final round 70. Rickie Fowler finished in a tie for third at 8-under. The Loxahatchee River resident was in the final pairing with Woods going into the final round. He, along with Rose, kept the pressure of Tiger most of the day but faltered a little late to end up carding a 1-over 73.
Also finishing in a tie for third was Tequesta resident Keegan Bradley. Bradley struggled on Thursday but recovered nicely to card rounds of 69-66-71 on the final three days to get the third place finish.
Woods regained the top spot in the world over Palm Beach Gardens resident Rory Mcllroy, who took the week off. After the victory, Woods is now expected to be the favorite heading into the Masters in two weeks. While Woods will take some time off before he makes the Trip to Augusta, many of the top golfers will head to Texas this week for one of the final tune-ups before the Masters, including Mcllroy.
