There are many delicious restaurants and cafes in South Florida which offer fresh seafood delights.  However, lobster rolls are a unique culinary skill. There are as many recipes for lobster rolls as there are chefs in Palm Beach County. There are tons of variations of the lobster roll - bun or no bun?  Serve hot or cold?

Three local Jupiter restaurants offer tasty variations of the New England lobster roll.

Cod and Capers Seafood Market and Restaurant, 1201 U.S. Highway One, North Palm Beach, has a recipe that calls for its lobster roll to be filled with freshly steamed, hand-picked Maine Lobster meat tossed in light lemon-mayo dressing and served in a New England split-top roll.

Tomorrow, sculptor and scuba diver, Thomas McDonald and his students from the Riviera Beach Maritime Academy will be revealing their latest project. McDonald and his artistically gifted students have been working hard on a beautiful mermaid sculpture that will live underwater. The mermaid, named Andrea, is made of concrete and is supposed to be submerged tomorrow off of the Coast of Palm Beach County.

McDonald has created a number of other under water sculptures that currently rest on the sea floor off of the Breakers Reef in Palm Beach. Last year, McDonald donated three 1,500-pound shark sculptures. The three cement hammerhead shark sculptures were sunk into the crystal clear waters of the Lake Worth Lagoon at Phil…

There is something for everyone at the Florida Oceanographic Society, from young to “young at heart”.  Take a scenic ride from the Jupiter area to Hutchison Island in Stuart, FL and see the 57-acre nature center.  The nature center is positioned between the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River.

This year at the Martin County Fair the Florida Oceanographic Society presented hands-on demonstrations with sharks, stingrays, turtles, oysters and more.   If you did not have an opportunity to get out seeing the exhibit at the Martin County Fair visit the Florida Oceanographic Coastal Center and feed the resident stingrays, explore the “touch tank” and closely observe a feeding frenzy in the 750,000 gallon “Gamefish Lagoon”.

This nonprofit organization…

Perhaps in South Florida the weather is a bit cool, say 70 degrees, obviously much too cool on a winter day to hit the beach or the waterways.  It would be a great opportunity to try something a little different.   Pull the trigger and consider a shotgun sport at one of the many sporting clubs in the area.

The National Sporting Federation defines sporting clays as “a challenging clay target game designed to simulate a variety of field shooting situations. On sporting clays course shooters are presented with a wide variety of targets that duplicate the flight path of birds, such as flushing, crossing, incoming and other angling shots.”

South Florida Shooting Club is one of the best shooting clubs in South Florida.  Only a forty-five minute drive…

This week, February 17, 2016, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) will host a public meeting on the replacement of the US 1 Bridge, connecting the Town of Jupiter to the Village of Tequesta.  The meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. at the Jupiter Community Center.

The bridge, constructed in 1958, spans over the Loxahatchee River and Intracoastal Waterway.  It has been deemed "structurally deficient and functionally obsolete".  In September of 2014, the bridge was structurally checked out and received "substandard sufficiency ratings providing justification for replacement".

Back in 2013 a $16 million rehab of the bridge was taken into consideration.  Replacing the 50 plus year old…

Little known interesting facts about Florida are immense.  Of course, there are the well-known tidbits, such as Florida is known as the Sunshine State. It is the flattest state in the United States and has the longest coastline that borders both the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean.  Orlando attracts more visitors because of their amusement parks than any other city with amusement park attractions, as well as other facts.

Many people think Florida is the furthest south state in the United States, but it is not, Hawaii is further south.

A team of researchers at the University of Florida, Gainesville, first developed Gatorade sports drink.   The unique combination of water, electrolytes and carbohydrates were developed to replenish student…

A rare North Atlantic right mother whale and calf appeared this week in the Sebastian Inlet and meandered into the mouth of the Indian River Lagoon.

The North Atlantic right whale is one of the most endangered species of large whales.  According to the World Wildlife Federation, there are approximately 500 whales and very little population growth even though seven decades of protection have been in place.  The whale is usually found along the Atlantic Coastline, primarily the United States and Canada.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have been following the particular North Atlantic right whale for four years now.  They have named her “Clipper” for she has a missing section of her fluke. These whales migrate every year in…

One of the best features of living in southern Florida is the year round warm weather. Luckily, for us Floridians we often get to walk the beach or surf the waves while the rest of the country is a snow covered, wonderland.

Thanks to a winter storm brewing off of the mid-Atlantic coast, there is an eminent threat of snow to the North East, and to just a crisp night here in Florida. South Florida will continue to be fairly warm and very sunny this week with a cool breeze in the air with temperatures still not beating the season’s record low.

According the National Weather Service, “the low temperature so far this morning in West Palm Beach was just 44 degrees. While that’s 13 degrees below the normal low for this time of year, it doesn’t beat the 40…

A couple of years ago a Florida man posted pictures on Facebook of himself and his daughters playing with a baby manatee.  Sounds innocent enough but according to the Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act, “it is illegal to molest, harass, disturb or touch a manatee”.  The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission authorities arrested the Florida native.

The man had no idea it was illegal to touch the “vulnerable species”.  The man faced a misdemeanor charge that entails a couple hundred dollars fine and a couple months in jail.  He meant no harm to the little manatee.

The manatee is protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972, by the Endangered Species Act of 1978, and the Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act of 1978.  If convicted of…
