Wild Ocean Science
The non-profit scientific research organization, The Wild Dolphin Project, has created the first annual evening of "Wild Ocean Science" this Saturday, March 24th. The event will educate guests about conservation, research and protection efforts for the Atlantic Spotted Dolphin.
Wild Ocean Science will be held at the Florida Atlantic University Jupiter Campus Lifelong Learning Center. Miles O'Brien, a broadcast news journalist who focuses on science, technology and aerospace will be the special guest host. The night will showcase the newest episode of the South Florida PBS production series "Changing Seas," an Emmy Award winning marine science series centered on ocean exploration and environmental issues.Â
There will also be a meet-n-greet with Wild Dolphin Project staff and a book signing with Dr. Denise Herzing, founder and director of the organization. Take a chance on the raffle for some awesome and unique items like scuba diving lessons, spa packages, a wine sampling experience, restaurant certificates, dolphin photo prints, wood carvings and more.Â
The event will be held from 5:30-8 p.m. at FAU in Jupiter. Click here for tickets.
Atlantic Spotted Dolphins are classified as "data deficient" on the ICUN Red List of Threatened Species, as little is known about the population of these dolphins. They're often found in the waters of South Florida and the Bahamas but are hunted for food and bait in the Caribbean Sea and possibly along the coasts of South America and West Africa. They're also incidentally killed in fisheries when they become entagled in nets and gear. However it is unkown how many are killed this way, meaning it's not known to what extent the species is threatened with extinction.Â
The Wild Dolphin Project works to study and record the numbers and behaviors of dolphin pods off the South Florida coast. Their objectives are to gather information on the natural history of these dolphins, including dolphin social structure, genetics, communication and habitat. Founded in 1985, the organization is the longest running dolphin research project in the world.Â
Event location: 5353 Parkside Dr., PC-154, Jupiter, FL 33458.
