The 2016 Summer Olympics is a major international multi-sport event being hosted in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Rio is the first South American city to host the Summer Olympics during the country's winter season. Rio 2016 will run from August 5, 2016 to August 21, 2016. More than ten thousand athletes from over 200 countries are participating. Athletes will compete in sports like swimming, diving, gymnastics, equestrian, various martial arts, soccer/football, weightlifting, wrestling and much more.
The Rio 2016 opening ceremony will take place at the world famous football (soccer) Maracanã Stadium on August 5th. The ceremony includes welcoming speeches, hoisting of the flags and the parade of athletes with an artistic performance to showcase the host nation’s culture with a cast of over 6,000 volunteers who will dance in this celebration. Rio 2016's slogan is “Viva sua paixão” which translates to “Live your passion". The Olympics will conclude with a closing ceremony on August 21, 2016.
Olympic Games are a global multi-sporting event subdivided into summer and winter games. Previously, the summer and winter games were in the same year, with a four-year gap between the games. These days the winter and summer games alternate by two years. The next winter games will be in PyeongChang, South Korea from February 9 to 25, 2018. Toyko, Japan will host the 2020 Summer Olympics.
