BENEFITS OF SUNSHINE
While living in one of the happiest seaside towns in America, Jupiter, Florida residents and visitors are basking in the sun on white sand beaches and tropically landscaped resort styled pools. Wisconsin is known for its cheese (yummy, but stinky!), Michigan is known for its factories (go Detroit!), and Florida is known as the SUNSHINE STATE! And yes, there is good news about sunshine! It is healthy for you! Did you know that in small increments, sunshine can make a positive difference on your health?
The good news is that sunshine stimulates the production of serotonin which then promotes a good mental outlook and fights Seasonal Affective Disorder. Seasonal Affective Disorder is a kind of depression that occurs, usually in the winter, builds up slowly over late autumn and winter months, and has similar symptoms to that of other forms of depression. The sun also help produce melatonin in our bodies. Melatonin is one of the chemicals in our bodies that help with sleep function.
Did you know that 90% of our Vitamin D comes from our exposure to the sun? The question is … how much is being absorbed? We need Vitamin D to help lower cholesterol and help fight heart disease, strengthen bones and teeth. It also helps with the absorption of calcium and support the immune system.
Regular exposure to sunshine, in moderation, is a great way to allow your cells to use the ultraviolet B rays to synthesize the Vitamin D from the sun. Keep in mind that for the body to absorb these healthy benefits, you must be with out sun screen lotion. Studies have indicated it only takes approximately 15 – 20 minutes of sun exposure to absorb the benefits of the suns rays and then put the sun screen ON!
