On Friday, some of the top local golfers converged upon the East Course at Admirals Cove to try and begin the qualifying process for next month's U.S. Open.

Open to amateurs and professionals with a 1.4 handicap or lower, 84 golfers from around the state and around the world entered the qualifying event. Out of those 84 golfers, five golfers advanced out of the local qualifier and will move on to sectional qualifying the first week of June.

Richard Terga of Palm Beach Gardens, Ryan Yip of Canada, Zachary Oakley of Palm City and Christian Westhorpe all qualified for the sectional qualifying event as well. Terga, Yip, and Oakley qualified with rounds of 69, while Westhorpe received the last qualifying spot with a 2-under 70.

If any of the five qualifiers should not be able to participate in the next round of qualifying, then first alternate Peter Mathison of Jupiter or second alternate Billy Hemstock of England would take their place.

The Ritz-Carlton in Bradenton will host the sectional qualifying event on June 3rd. The sectional qualifier will be a one day 36-hole event, with the winner and other qualifiers advancing to Merion Golf Club for the U.S. Open June 13-16.
