HARBOURSIDE TO HOST LIONFISH DERBY TO BUILD REEFS!
July 10th and 11th Harbourside Place in Jupiter will host a Lionfish Derby to benefit the Andrew “Red” Harris Foundation. The foundation is named after Andrew Harris, a 26 year old man who passed away last year in a boating accident. The Andrew “Red” Harris Foundation raises money to build artificial reefs to enhance the local marine environment. The foundation is building forty unique, 6 by 8 foot free form concrete modules which will be set off the coast of Jupiter in August of this year.
The derby will begin first thing in the morning, at sunrise, and will continue through the day until 4:00pm. The contestants must be in with all of their catches by 4:00pm to be scored by the judges.
The team with the most lionfish will win $500. Teams will be allowed to catch the lionfish by net or spear and are allowed to either; scuba dive, free dive or snorkel.
Lionfish are not native to Florida. They are ravenous eaters with no natural predators so their numbers continue to climb whilst damaging the natural habitat and forcing out native species. The derby helps control their population and protects the good, native species. Lionfish also happen to be a delicious fish to eat, so it’s a “win-win” for everyone and everything creature involved.
