Meals on Wheels of the Palm Beaches is a local member of the national organization that brings meals to elderly people in need. Meals on Wheels of the Palm Beaches predominantly served southern Palm Beach County when it was formed, but over recent years it has expanded to the north and is now serving residents in Jupiter as of this month.
The local organization currently has 15 people in Jupiter who will receive meals and serves more than 200 people in the county aged 65+. Sixty percent of these people are over the age of 85.
"You didn’t expect to live to 90 years old. How do you budget for that?” asked Pam Calzadilla, president and CEO of the local branch. A longer life expectancy brings challenges later in life and many of the elderly people receiving meals have cancer or other illnesses. “The meal is definitely nourishing, but the compassion, the person who’s visiting every day is the thing they look forward to,” Calzadilla said in an interview.
Last year, the organization gave out 45,000 meals and expects to serve 60,000 this year. With these projected increases, Calzadilla said they are in need of volunteers. Anyone who would like to help can find out more information at mowpb.org.
