As we get closer to the U.S. Open at Merion Golf Club, more and more golfers have set out with the goal of qualifying for our national championship of golf.
Qualifying got under way on May 3rd at Admirals Cove in Jupiter. Since then, there have been 110 more local qualifiers at different locations throughout the country. While the qualifier at Admirals Cove sent five golfers to the next round of qualifying, many other local golfers have found success at qualifiers in different parts of the country.
Port St. Lucie resident Colin Amaral shot a 69 in a qualifier at the Rhode Island Country Club to advance to one of 13 sectional qualifying events. Dan Konieczny of Jupiter advanced out of the Export, Pennsylvania at Westmoreland Country Club with a round of 68. Fellow Jupiter resident Marc Turnesa advanced out of the qualifier held at The Club at Emerald Hills in Hollywood with a round of 69. Matthew Springer of Stuart and Sunny Kim of Palm Beach Gardens advanced out of the Wellington qualifier held at the Wanderers Club. Springer won the qualifier with a round of 67, while Kim shot a round of 71 to advance.
All players who have advanced from the local qualifier will participate in a sectional qualifier. The sectional qualifiers will be a 36 hole one day event and will be held at 11 different sites from May 27- June 3. The U.S. Open will be held at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore, Pennsylvania June 10-16. For more information on the U.S. Open including a complete list of qualifiers and results, visit www.usopen.com.
