Jupiter Medical Center is set to become the latest Palm Beach County hospital with a pediatric emergency department when it opens its Mastroianni Family Pediatric Emergency Department on Friday.

The 6,300-square-foot facility, under construction since 2017, boasts eight bedded rooms and two triage rooms, as well as state-of-the-art equipment.

Jupiter Medical treated about 5,400 children in its emergency department last fiscal year, hospital public relations specialist Ernestine Williams said. Since the hospital opened its De George Pediatric Unit in 2016, pediatric emergency visits have increased by 30 percent, the Jupiter Medical Center Foundation said in a news release.

The new wing is linked by a tube system to a laboratory, so staff members can quickly send specimens for testing. There also is a portable X-ray unit and a “negative pressure room” to isolate patients with suspected airborne illnesses, such as tuberculosis or chicken pox, he said.

The wing won’t be able to treat trauma cases, Hodges said, but a nearby helipad ensures those patients can be quickly transported to St. Mary’s Medical Center.

This is a great addition to the state-of-the-art Jupiter Medical center and yet another way for Jupiter residents to feel secure knowing their kids are safe and will be provided for in the Palm Beaches.
