North Palm Beach Golfers Wins U.S. Open Qualifier at Willoughby Golf Club
North Palm Beach resident Clancy Waugh shot an 8-under par 64 on Monday at Willoughby Golf Club in Stuart to earn Medalist honors and advance out of the Local U.S. Open Qualifier.
The Benjamin High School grad and current Wake Forest golfer earned himself a trip to the June 8th 36 hole Sectional Qualifier at the Bear's Club in Jupiter as the low medalist.
For Waugh, it's a little bit of redemption after a less than stellar sophomore season with the Demon Deacons. After being named Freshman Athlete of the Year and becoming only the 11th Wake Forrest golfer in win a tournament last year, in 2015, Waugh had finished no better than 40th and just a week ago missed qualifying for NCAA regionals by one shot.
"I made every putt I really had a look at,” Waugh told the Palm Beach Post. “I was a little erratic off the tee, but I got it done with the putter. And I hit some quality wedges that really helped.”
Waugh is guaranteed a trip to the Bear's Club as a result of winning the qualifier and playing out of that location makes the most sense for him considering his knowledge of the course. Benjamin plays its matches out of the Bear's Club, meaning that Waugh has played that club probably hundreds of times.
"I was on the team for seven years, so I know it real well,” he said. “I’m quite a bit stronger than I was then, and we played different tees than I’ll be playing this time, so I might have to figure that out a little bit. But I know that front nine like the back of my hand.”
Also advancing out of the qualifier was Joseph McGeean of Stuart who shot a 69, Matthew Ceravolo of Wellington who shot a 70, and Tarik Can of Miami who also shot a 70. They will all compete in the Sectional Qualifier on June 8th as well at locations to be determined.
