The sun's setting a little later, the temperatures are getting a little warmer, afternoon rain showers are going to start creeping into the schedule, and the crowds will get a little thinner. Welcome to shoulder season in South Florida. Here are some ways to take advantage of this off-peak stretch before summer.

When is Shoulder Season in Florida?

Peak season in South Florida is typically February-April. It's when families take their kids on Spring Break, when adults come down for a late-winter, early spring escape from the snow or freezing rain, when college kids flock to the beaches, and when retirees, snowbirds, or soon-to-be retirees/snowbirds all add to the crowds.

"Shoulder Season" also known as "off-peak season" happens twice in South Florida: once in November-January, and once in April-June. Shoulder Season is great for locals because the weather is still near-perfect most days (with the exception of the couple colder weeks a year in December or January) but the crowds are thinner. For those who don't have to adhere to a school calendar, shoulder season is probably the best time to visit South Florida.

Things to Do During Shoulder Season

Rates for a lot of things start to come back to earth after peak season. For instance, most public golf courses dropped their rates a little on April 1st, or will soon. So, here's a little list of some classic South Florida activities that you're more likely to be able to book/enjoy during shoulder season, and for a lower cost than during peak season.

  • Golf: again, rates at most public courses drop, and some private clubs offer summer trial memberships
  • Boating: whether you're looking to book a fishing charter, find a spot at the sandbar, or go out on a sunset cruise, there will likely be fewer people out there, and those who are out there are more likely to be local and more likely have real boating experience
  • Dining & Happy hours: reservations get less competitive, wait times fall, and the likelihood of finding a good seat at the bar during happy hour increases
  • Concerts: many artists typically aren't touring during January-March, so April kicks off when more big names start making stops in South Florida's concert venues
  • Day Trips: been wanting to get up to the parks in Orlando? Check out the Springs? Make your way to the Keys? April-June is a great time for a day trip or weekend getaway
  • Beaches: of course, finding a good parking spot at one of our beautiful beach parks gets easier. Although, the sand is about to get hotter, so watch those bare feet, and those of your dog!
