All you need is love, especially so close to Valentine’s Day.  However, a little chocolate cannot hurt; it may even help you feel better!

For years, scientists have been trying to unwrap the mystery of chocolate.  What makes it so irresistible? Is it the cocoa beans, caffeine, sugar or any of the hundreds of combinations that raise our spirits and libido?

Scientists at Cambridge University have conducted MRI’s of the brain and concluded a rather modest explanation.  Neuroscientist, Adrian Owen, of Cambridge University‘s Wolfson Brain Imaging Centre said, “The scientific data suggests that the mood enhancing effects of chocolate do not appear to affect the brain via a direct biological action.”   Scientists concluded that chocolate is linked to feelings of wellbeing because it simply tastes good.

The effects of eating chocolate are psychological.  The aroma, taste and texture makes eating chocolate pleasurable and makes it an enjoyable experience.  This experience stimulates the “feel good” centers in the brain and we feel content.

Conduct your own research this weekend.  Explore the sweeter side science during the 10th Annual Science of Chocolate, February 7, 2015 from 11am to 5pm, South Florida Science Center and Aquarium, 4801 Dreher Trail North, West Palm Beach.

Participants can experience interactive chocolate experiments, including the use of liquid nitrogen chocolate, painting with M&M’s, making cocoa lip balm, as well as complimentary tasting stations.
