Masters week is finally here, and as golf fans turn their attention to the season’s first major, let’s take a look back at the final tune-up event before the green jacket is handed out.

Marin Laird has spent much of the past year working on his game. Laird entered the week ranked 157th in the FedEx Cup Standings after missing four of eight cuts this year. Starting the day four shots behind round 3 leader Billy Horschel, Laird picked the perfect time to turn everything around and get hot.

jl-old_trail4-1_2592Laird, who broke the streak of 14 consecutive week of American wins on the tour, shot a course record tying 63 to secure his first win in over two years. With the win, not only did Laird jump all the way up to number 18 in the FedEx Cup standings but he punched his ticket to Augusta National to participate in the Masters for the third consecutive year. He needed to win to get into the field and became the first player to qualify for the event in the last week before the tournament since Johnson Wagner did it in 2008.

Laird shot 14 under par over the four days and won by two strokes over Rory Mcllroy. The Palm Beach Gardens resident has also been struggling this year and, after adding the event at the last moment, put together his best four round performance of the year in Texas. He now goes into the Masters with more confidence, having worked on approving his game.

“Everything I wanted to accomplish this week, I accomplished,” Mcllroy said to reporters after his final round Sunday. “I’m very happy that I’m going into next week with my game in good shape and my confidence level pretty high.”

Mcllroy finished the weekend at 12 under par and scored rounds under 70 for the first time this year. The weekend continued to get better for Mcllroy who also signed an endorsement deal with Omega watches to be their newest spokesperson.
