Rory Mcllroy Scheduled to Play In Irish Open This Week
While most of the golfing world will descend on Congressional Country Club this week for the AT&T National, there will be one big name that surprisingly will not be found on the tee sheet.
No it’s not Tiger Woods. The world number one and Jupiter Island resident announced last week that he was going to be pulling out of his own tournament due to an elbow issue. The name missing from this week’s event in Bethesda, Maryland is world number two Rory Mcllroy.
After all, it was Mcllroy who won his first major at Congressional when he won the 2011 U.S. Open with a record score of 16-under par. Instead, the Palm Beach Gardens resident is opting to play overseas in The Irish Open. This will be the seventh time in his career that Mcllroy will play in the event held at Carton House Golf Club in the Republic of Ireland. His best finish came in 2008 when he finished seventh.
Mcllroy has had a very up and down 2013 season up to this point. After withdrawing midway through his second round at The Honda Classic, he ripped off four straight top 25 finishes including a second place finish at the Valero Texas Open and an eighth place finish at The Players Championship. He has not finished in the top 50 since, missing the cut at the BMW PGA Championship in England and finishing in a tie for 57th at the Memorial and a tie for 41st at the U.S. Open two weeks ago.
Mcllroy, who will once again look to get his first win of the 2013 season, goes into the week as the favorite. If you want to watch Rory on Thursday though, you will need to set your alarm as he will be teeing off at 2:50am locally (7:50am in Ireland).
