South Florida Shark Tagging Excursion
Have you ever dreamed of learning more about sharks? There are over 400 species of sharks of all sizes, shapes and colors. They live in very different habitats. Some sharks even live beneath the ice in the Arctic Ocean. South Floridians love the beach and all what “salt life” encompasses.
Sharks are gentle and amazing creatures. They sense smell and that tells them where to go for prey. Humans kill millions of these prehistoric creatures every year. Humans should love sharks. You have a greater chance of being seriously injured by a cow or a car accident.
Most species of sharks never stop swimming. They are always “on the go”. They must continuously keep moving forward to extract oxygen from the water through their gills. If they stop swimming, they will not be able to breathe.
Shark tagging is offered through the Guy Harvey Research Institute and Nova University. The cost is $175.00 per person. The funds collected will be used to support the research and education efforts of Guy Harvey Research Institute.
Participants are encouraged to help in the research process as much as they would like. Everything from preparing the rigs, to reeling in the sharks - and even placing the tracking tag onto the shark. You will also be allowed to extract a tissue sample for data collection purposes. “Participants are encouraged to help in the research process as much as they would like.
