The following account is written by Rick Herter, Internationally Recognized Historical Aviation Artist,  back seat qualified participant of Operation Noble Eagle, and resident of Palm Beach.  Herter actually flew over "Ground Zero" during Operation Noble Eagle (see photo below).  Photography is by Herter, as is painting.  The following account is as it was recounted to him by the first pilots to scramble. This weekend will mark the 30th anniversary of Operation Desert Storm, the United States led attack on Bagdad and Iraqi forces.  In January 1991, members from all five military branches joined a coalition to push out Saddam Hussein’s forces from Kuwait for Operation Desert Storm.  It meant the U.S. was at war for the first time since Vietnam.

In the early morning hours of January 17, 1991. Aircraft from the United States Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps began a massive air attack against targets in Kuwait and Iraq as Operation Desert Shield became Operation Desert Storm. One such notable resident of South Palm Beach is Rick Herter, Historical Aviation Artist. Herter has pieces hanging in the Smithsonian Institute, the Pentagon, the World Trade Center Museum and countless other esteemed locales.

Rick Herter graduated from Spring Arbor University with a Bachelor of Arts in which he garnered his artistic skills and focused in the commercial art and illustration arena.
