Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Baptist minister and social rights activist in the United States in the 1950s and 1960s. He was a leader of the American civil rights movement, encouraging equality. He organized peaceful protests as leader of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, including the March on Washington in 1963. Dr. King led the civil rights movement in the United States from the mid-1950s until his death by assassination in 1968. 

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, multiple events are scheduled today.
