VIP SAKE TASTING ROOM…MORIKAMI MUSEUM and JAPANESE GARDENS
Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens, Delray Beach, offers authentic Japanese cultural experiences to educate and inspire. According to the Japanese zodiac this year, 2015, we celebrate the “Year of the Sheep” for those born in 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, and 2015. If this is your year, perhaps a visit to the ephemeral beauty of “The Garden of the Drops of Dew” and a Sake VIP Tasting experience is warranted.
Within the walls of the Morikami Museum are tranquil gardens. Morikami gardens, Roji-en: Garden of the Drops of Dew, were designed to be a living exhibit complementing the museum. Designer Hoichi Kurisu created a garden complex with historical and aesthetic elements. Its six distinct gardens are inspired by, but are not replicas of, famous gardens of Japan. Kurisu has created a unique garden constructed in the spirit of the masters for individuals to discover and reflect.
After a leisurely stroll in the gardens, try the VIP Tasting Room at Oshogatsu. Make arrangements to sip sake. Sake was brewed over 2,000 years ago and used as an offering to the deities. Sake plays an important role in Japanese culture, as it is believed to ward off bad fortune and bring harmony.
According to the Morikami, “each of the sakes in the VIP Tasting Room is a Junmai Daiginjo – ultra-premium sake. This means that the rice grains used in these sakes have had at least 50% of the original grain polished away. Sakes of this grade are considered the height of sake brewing craft and an embodiment of the brew master’s art. Junami Daiginjosake is the most labor intensive grade of sake because it requires traditional tools and precise methods in addition to a long, cold fermentation period. Junmai Daiginjo sake is usually light and refined, with delicate, complex, and sophisticated flavors and elegant aromatics.”
