Visit Peanut Island This Fall in the Palm Beaches
Peanut Island is a favorite destination for boaters. Even in the Fall, Peanut Island offers lots of fun with fishing, snorkeling, and camping opportunities within the beautiful clean waters that surround it. Take a casual stroll on the paved pathways which wrap around the Island as well as the guarded and unguarded beaches for a day of fun in the sun.
The island was created in 1918 as a result of material excavated during the Inlet construction. Its name comes from a peanut oil production plant which its primary function was to serve as a shipping terminal. It wasn't a success. In 1946, the government abandoned the plant retaining the name of the island. They then turned it into a "spoil site for the inlet maintenance and shipping channel". With a long-term arrangement with the government, the island became available to the public as a park. Today, Peanut Island is as a historic man-made 80-acre park with one of the most desirable recreational sites in all of Palm Beach County. Formerly a Coast Guard Facility and a secret shelter bunker for John F. Kennedy during the Cold War, now it is the Palm Beach Maritime Museum. Located on the southern side of the island, it is open for visitors.
