South Florida is known for sunshine, beaches and sun kissed oranges. Will another fruit outshine the oranges?   Christopher Columbus brought the first citrus saplings to the “new world”.  Early Spanish explores, quite possibly Ponce de Leon himself, planted the first orange vegetation in St. Augustine. This legacy has blossomed into $9 billion dollar industry. The sunshine state produces more oranges than any other region in the world.

Years ago, “u-pick” orange groves were all over the state. Now they are few and far between. Tomorrow, sculptor and scuba diver, Thomas McDonald and his students from the Riviera Beach Maritime Academy will be revealing their latest project. McDonald and his artistically gifted students have been working hard on a beautiful mermaid sculpture that will live underwater. The mermaid, named Andrea, is made of concrete and is supposed to be submerged tomorrow off of the Coast of Palm Beach County.

McDonald has created a number of other under water sculptures that currently rest on the sea floor off of the Breakers Reef in Palm Beach. The Schoolhouse Children’s Museum and Learning Center, located in Boynton Beach, brings old Florida History to life.  There are so many schools sprinkled around our area that it is hard to believe that at one time all the children in the area attending the same school.  Children dress and reenact pioneer days in South Florida.

What stands today, as the Schoolhouse Children’s Museum and Learning Center was a one-room schoolhouse. In 1913, the one room schoolhouse was replaced with a new “modern” building with six rooms and indoor plumbing!
