The presentations showcase items from the museum’s remarkable collection, as well as pieces appropriated from private collectors and other respected institutions.
Iwasaki Tsuneo is a renowned research biologist and artist. Upon retiring from a career as a research biologist, Iwasaki expanded his own practice of copying sacred texts, called shyakyo. In his unique process, instead of separating the verses written into vertical blocks. He reconfigured this inspiration in imaginative ways, giving it new life as the glow around a flame, a DNA helix, lightning bolts striking an expanse, and more.
Tsuneo created this artistic practice to express the intricate relationship between science and Buddhism. The deceivingly minimal paintings inspire observers to reflect upon the “interconnectedness of the universe, pinpointing the intersection between scientific phenomena and Buddhist principles”. During his life, Iwasaki used his art as an extension of his devotional practice of shyakyo.
