Lion Country Safari
Lion Country Safari is Florida’s only drive-through and walk-through safari and amusement park, and it’s in located on over 600 acres in Palm Beach County. Lion Country Safari was founded in 1967 and claims to be the first cage-less zoo in the United States. In 2009, the safari was named the third best in the nation by the USA Travel Guide.
The safari was developed by entrepreneurs that wanted to bring the African safari experience without having the price of traveling and for those who cannot make the long journey to Africa. The location was chosen in Palm Beach County because of its year-round outdoor climate, growing population, and a large amount of tourist who travel to South Florida to vacation.
The safari consists of over 1000 animals from 6 continents throughout the 7 sections in the preserve. Featuring notable species roaming freely throughout, such as lions, white rhinos, chimpanzees, giraffes, and zebras just to name a few. Recently, the safari welcomed at new baby zebra that made headlines around the country.
After driving through the 4- miles through the safari, there is also a 33-acre amusement park located on the property called, Safari World, that continues to grow and develop. The park features restaurants, gift shops, a water spray ground, petting zoo, boat rides, merry-go-rounds, exhibits, and more.
A campground called the KOA Campground is located on the grounds to provide and accommodate for overnight guest visiting. There are over 200 campsites, food outlets and stores, gas station, veterinary hospital, and over 170 employees who help run and operate the facility. The campgrounds are a popular destination for educational programs, tour groups, and summer camping events.
Since it opened 50 years ago, Lion Country Safari has become one of Palm Beach County’s and South Florida’s leading tourist attractions.
Lion Country Safari is opened every day of the year from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm, tickets are required to enter and can be purchased online or at the gate.
