SUMMERTIME SAILFISH
Fishing Report 8.8.14
August is always an exciting month here in South Florida for fisherman both inshore and offshore. It is the start to a transition for weather patterns especially toward the end of the month. Most days in August will be smoking hot with tropical weather in the mix which can really stir up some great fishing.
OFFSHORE- The wahoo fishing has started to fire up as the moon gets bigger and bigger. Reports show that wahoo are being caught from Palm Beach to Jupiter Inlet from 120’-300’ of water early in the morning and late in the afternoon. The Bonita are getting pretty thick right now (a good reason why the wahoo are here); so if you’re trying to avoid the Bonita, keep the baits big and/or speed up the boat a bit when trolling.
Summer time sailfish has been extremely good with plenty of sails being caught in 250’-400’ depths of water. (Live sardines, small runners, google eyes, or cigar minnows are all good choices for the sailfish bite.) Mixed in with the Sailfish should be a few dolphin; be prepared to deal with lots of small schools of dolphin before the better ones show up. Black fin Tuna have been showing up in reports within South Florida as well!
INSHORE- The snook fishing has been great since they are spawning now and seem to become very aggressive in their feeding habits this month. They have pulled back from the inlets and are gathering around the bridges and spillways, and for the most part are willing to eat big baits right now.
Small tarpon are filling in and look for them rolling early in the morning and late in the afternoon. Live shrimp, small pilchards, live finger mullet, and soft plastic swim baits should all get a bite from the hungry tarpon.
Some big jacks have been cruising and typically will blast a well presented top water plug.
Try fishing in the morning or late afternoons to avoid heavy crowds on the beach and boating on the waterways for the best chances on landing a good catch!
