South Florida is a diving magnet with luscious reefs with natural and fabricated beauty under the surface. Did you happen to know that over the past 20 years, Broward County’s Artificial Reef Program has situated over seventy-five synthetic reefs on the ocean floor? One mile off the coast of Deerfield Beach is a reef known as Rapa Nui Reef. It weighs about three hundred tons and is half the length of a football field. The Rapa Nui Reef distinguishes the city in the way 887 similar monuments did Easter Island in the remote South Pacific.

The reef is the combination of a public art project of the “Moai” figures that were created in Stuart along with fabricated reef materials. The reef is called Rapa Nui, the Polynesian translation of “Easter Island.”…

As the dog days of summer wind down and the kids are back at school, it’s the perfect opportunity to allow furry family members to have a special pool, and play day. Not much further south in Broward County there are two splashy water play parks, which are going to the dogs. Both pool parks are normally people-only. Broward County has 26 miles of coastline, 24 miles of which are monitored for turtle nesting activity by the Broward County Sea Turtle Conservation Program. Broward County is considered a “medium-density” nesting area by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and hosts an average of 2,000 nests annually.

Sea turtles are marine reptiles that have been around since the time of the dinosaurs, over 110 million years ago. There are seven species of sea turtles worldwide and five species found in Florida. These sea turtles are protected by federal law. Broward County protects sea turtles by supporting efforts to conserve their nesting and in-water habitats.

The Hillsboro Lighthouse Preservation Society was founded in October 1997. The purpose of preserving the historic Hillsboro Light Station in its original form for the safety, enjoyment, and education of the public. The Hillsboro Lighthouse is a key landmark in Broward County.

It was first illumined with light in 1907 and has been a bright shining light on the east coast. The historical beauty, the Hillsboro Lighthouse, has survived storms and harsh marine environments to stand tall as a controller to ocean explorers. It endures to be a well-known shining beacon.

David is a city in Broward County just twenty-five miles north of Miami. Prior to European colonization, the Tequesta were the native people of what is now Davie. Campsites and graves have been found in Davie, the oldest dating back 5,000 to 7,000 years. The landscape and terrain were, and still is, ideal for plants, including orchids.
