This past weekend, sportfishing yachts, center consoles, and even superyachts travelled to Old Bahama Bay for what is now the largest fishing tournament ever held at the West End resort, the 2021 OBB Wahoo Charity Cup. Not only did 45 boats register in the tournament, but Old Bahama Bay sold out their rooms for the first time in 10 years!

After adhering to Bahamian customs law in which all travelers had to test negative for Covid-19, participants were greeted with Harry’s famous conch salad, fresh banana bread, goombay smashes, and the hospitable smiles of local residents.

Having been postponed since November of 2020 due to inclement weather, the tournament was a welcome weekend of festivities and fishing in a community missed and loved by so many.

The Paws and Reels Fishing Tournament this past weekend involved more than just fishing. It raised money for Amber's Animal Outreach, and was a celebration of man's best friend as people from Northern Palm Beach County brought their rescue pups along for the festivities. Here are a few of our favorite dogs in attendance, as captured by photographer Michael O'Malley.

Established in 1935 by the West Palm Beach Fishing Club, the Silver Sailfish Derby is the oldest running sailfish tournament in the world. Limited to 50 boats, the 2020 Derby is sold out.

The Silver Sailfish Derby is a tournament with a massive amount of history, credited with developing the red release pennant and as one of the front-runners in promoting catch and release. Ernest Hemingway was a Derby trophy sponsor at one point, and the only time the tournament didn’t run was for three years during WWII.

The Derby features a two-day, Thursday & Friday, fishing format - a measure that was taken to avoid competition with weekend anglers and to foster increased tournament participation.

As we ring in 2020, we reflect on a turbulent year helping our friends at Old Bahama Bay rebuild after Hurricane Dorian. Winner’s Circle Charities was the first organization cleared by the President of OBB to arrive at the docks, and swiftly organized donation drop-off locations, sponsored Costco trips, and secured hundreds of boats to respond to the needs of families and friends in the Bahamas. Rest assured, OBB is back and better than ever! If it wasn’t for the Winner’s Circle Charities Fishing Tournament every year, Winner’s Circle Charities would not have had the immediate resources available to facilitate such a timely response, so thank you so much to all of the teams and sponsors who participate every single year!
