The Palm Beaches are filled with fitness fanatics—people who love to eat healthy, go to the gym, and practice active lifestyles. Unfortunately, one of the many difficult things about this difficult time is that many of the gyms in South Florida and around the country have shut down in order to practice responsible “social distancing” and reduce the spread of the new infectious coronavirus.

What this means for those who enjoy staying active is you need to come up with ways you can workout alone, or at home without the luxury of all your typical gym equipment. Here are some effective exercises you can do outside the gym.

Jumping Jacks

Jumping jacks are a classic exercise that get the job done. You can try doing timed sets or count the number you do. Depending on how good of shape you are in try going for four sets of anywhere from 25 to 500 jumping jacks and do walking lunges in-between for a great lower body burn.

Pushups work, plain and simple. You may have to distribute multiple sets of pushups throughout the day, but one goal you can set for yourself during this time of self-quarantine is to triple or even quadruple the number of pushups you can do in a single day.

Air Squats

Air squats work your quads, calves, glutes, and even your hamstrings. If you feel up to it, add a jump in-between each rep. If not, just stick to 4-sets of 10 reps or more.

Jogging gets a bad name these days. While it’s true that jogging is not the most effective fat burning exercise, it still does burn calories and is very good for the health of your cardiovascular system.

Bounding and Sprints

If fat-burning is what you are looking for, bounding and sprints or other “HIIT” exercises are the way to go. Dips

You don't need large equipment to do tricep dips. You can actually just use a chair. Trying doing between 3-5 sets of anywhere from 5-20 reps. In the beginning, start with a shallow rep and then go gradually deeper.

Situps are a great way to work your core including your abs and lower back. There are several different ways to try situps. You can hang your legs in the air or tuck your feet under a couch. Either way, go slow until you know you are properly stretched out and read to increase your intensity.
