While everyone loves a long weekend, Memorial Day is a time to honor and mourn military personnel who have died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. It started in 1868, shortly after the Civil War, when it was formalized by a "Memorial Day Order" issued by Grand Army of the Republic Commander-in-Chief John A. Logan to commemorate the sacrifices of those soldiers. Memorial Day became an official federal holiday in 1971.
