Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday in May.  It was formerly known as “Decoration Day” and it commemorates all men and women who have died in military service for the United States of America.  Many people visit cemeteries and memorials on Memorial Day and it is known as the informal start of the summer season!

Singer Island is an island just off Florida’s southeast coast. It is officially within the city limits of Riviera Beach and part of Palm Beach County. Singer Island runs East and West across Lake Worth Lagoon and Highway 703 which runs North and South down through the John D MacArthur Beach State Park onto the island. To be specific, Singer Island is not an island per se because it’s connected to the mainland by the state Park.

Palm Beach County divers take a dive to a 60,000-pound mermaid sculpture reef. This area has many reefs to dive offshore. This underwater landmark honors a local three-time breast cancer survivor. “Andrea's Reef”, an enormous mermaid honoring the courageous woman.  “Andreas Reef” has is located just 3/4 miles east off the Lake Worth Inlet, submerged under 75 feet of water. The sculptures for the reef were deployed off Ocean Reef Park on Singer Island, August 11, 2016.

Many Americans view Cinco de Mayo as a day for margaritas and Mexican food. Contrary to popular belief, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's independence day. Mexico’s independence is celebrated on September 16. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely victory over the French forces of Napoleon III on May 5, 1862, at the Battle of Puebla. The very first versions of those May 5 celebrations did not begin in Mexico. They began in the U.S. during the Gold Rush era and the Civil War.
