WORLD FAMOUS ARCHITECT DESIGNED HOUSES IN SALHAVEN VILLAGE... A LOCAL COMMUNITY GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN

Some of the pictures are still in existence; Salhaven Village’s official opening was in December of 1956.  According to the Time Magazine article, date December 17, 1956 “a band played and an American Legion color guard attended the flag-raising event held in the newly paved Betsey Boss Plaza.”  The Betsy Ross Plaza does not exist anymore, and Jonathan’s Landing and Jupiter Medical Center stand in its place.

The 634-acre concept was unique.  Residents of this tropical community would be union retirees living on union pensions and social security.  The planned community would have an outpatient clinic and a convalescence building (located where Jupiter Medical Center is currently located).  Named after Sal B. $1.00 an ACRE

A day late, actually, many years too late, but back in 1821 land in Jupiter was sold for just $1.00 an acre!     The same year, in which the great land of Florida became a formal state of the colonies, a landowner named Don Eusebio Gomez considered releasing acreage he owned.   In 1815, the King and Queen of Spain awarded him 12,000 acres in an area surrounding the Indian and Loxahatchee Rivers as well as a barrier island between the Jupiter Inlet and the St. Lucie Inlet.   The name given to this area was a word for the Roman mythology god “Jobe”.

COASTAL CLEANUPS

Join the South Florida community on two coastal cleanups all happening on Saturday, Septemeber 20, 2014.

Trash on the beach and in our waters such as food wrappers, straws, cigarettes and bottle caps can disturb aquatic existence. Balloons are repeatedly found at the cleanings, this item could block sea turtles and other animals’ digestive tracts. Fishing line and hooks can tangle marine life and also hurt humans walking along the beaches.

BRITISH AVIATORS used JUPITER RIVER for SEA PLANE TRAINING

 The U.S. Government requested that a group of visiting British aviators be accommodated at the local hotel, The Carlin House, and that a windsock be hoisted to the top of the flagpole during the winter of 1916/1917.  The intent of the visit was that the group consisting of three groups of three:  a pilot, copilot and mechanic along with a small seaplane practice advanced training maneuvers on the  Jupiter Inlet and Loxahatchee River.   The hotel was unable to accommodate the group, so they arranged to stay with Jupiter residents Mr. and Mrs. Walter Savage.   Mr. and Mrs. Savage were happy to accommodate!

INVASIVE PLANTS at JUPITER INLET LIGHTHOUSE

When a natural area is invaded often by a natural dispersal of seeds, or planting of exotic species that has become naturalized, these “weeds” interfere with the function of the natural community.  Invasive plants have been identified at the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area.  The three-week removal project of the exotics is scheduled to begin Monday, August 25, 2014 in the hopes of attracting native plants and animals to the area such as gopher tortoises and scrub jays.  Black and red mangroves will be placed along the shoreline.  They have a stronger root system, disperse waves better which will be better at preventing erosion, and create a better habitat for young marine life.
