A day late, actually, many years too late, but back in 1821 land in Jupiter was sold for just $1.00 an acre!     The same year, in which the great land of Florida became a formal state of the colonies, a landowner named Don Eusebio Gomez considered releasing acreage he owned.   In 1815, the King and Queen of Spain awarded him 12,000 acres in an area surrounding the Indian and Loxahatchee Rivers as well as a barrier island between the Jupiter Inlet and the St. Lucie Inlet.   The name given to this area was a word for the Roman mythology god “Jobe”.

The land was given to Gomez for his “services to the crown”.   He was a merchant/shipper and a defender of St. Augustine.  When Florida became a U.S. territory all of the Spanish Land Grants, and this was…

South Florida Tourism

Now that the sun is warming up the northeast, the south Florida ‘season’ for tourism begins to wind down. Our winter season (which isn’t super wintery) has just been bustling and as it ended it set records. Across the nation hotels and resorts boasted 90 percent occupancy in February. This astonishingly high percentage rendered $5.1 million in bed taxes, as documented by the Tourist Development Council. March’s numbers clocked in at 87 percent. A few percentage points in occupancy can mean a gain of 10 percent in revenue because hotel owners can charge harder rates.

The chief marketing officer for Visit Florida, the tourism agency for the state, Paul Phipps, noted that Florida’s hotel occupancy was 80 percent in March of 2014.  This is 20 percent…

MSNBC Real Estate reported on a study that ranked 111 global cities looking for specific hallmarks of lively and progressive areas.  Using three main categories – commercial real estate, socio-economic momentum and high-value incubators representing “the quality of a city’s infrastructure, its innovation capability and the strength of its technology sector.”

According to data provided by the National Association of Realtors, a lack of houses for sale continues to lift the prices of homes for sale in much of the country, and our area.  This in turn has pushed down the number of existing homes sold in January.

The torrential weather has not helped either. NAR Chief Economist Lawrence Yun said, “Disruptive and prolonged winter weather patterns across the country are impacting a wide range of economic activity, and housing is no exception.   Some housing activity will be delayed until spring.”

The National Association of Realtors noted some significant changes among the population of homebuyers.

1.     First time homebuyers accounted for 26% of purchases in January 2014. That is the lowest market share for first…

Yes, you read that correctly, Edward Snowden, who worked as a contract employee at the U.S. National Security Agency in Hong Kong and leaked documents that damaged the security interests of several nations, has been nominated for the prestigious Nobel Peace Prize!

Anyone can be nominated for the prestigious award.  Two Socialist lawmakers Baard Vegard Solhjell, a former environmental minister, and Snorre Valen, both from Norway, jointly nominated the former National Security Agency contractor, stating his disclosures have contributed to making a more peaceful world.

In their nomination letter, the Norwegian politicians stated, “We do not necessarily condone or support all of his disclosures.  We are, however, convinced that the public debate and…
